TIRUPATI: An elderly man and his three grandchildren, including twins, died in their sleep after inhaling carbon monoxide fumes emitting from an idling bike parked inside their house, at Punganur in Annamayya district on Sunday.Police said the family kept the bike, serviced a day ago, idling all night in their house on the advice of their mechanic. The incident underscores the dangers of keeping vehicles running in closed spaces.Cops confirm carbon monoxide poisoningBy morning, the toxic fumes filled the house, claiming the lives of Ramachandra (75), and his grandchildren Karthik (15), and twins Charitha (7) and Chandana (7).

The children’s parents, Murali and Revathi, were asleep on the terrace. When they woke up in the morning, they found the house full of smoke and their father and children dead. The couple has one more daughter, Sindhu Priya, who was away at a relative’s home.Inspector Subbarayudu of the Punganur police station confirmed that the deaths were caused by continuous inhalation of carbon monoxide released by the bike. Police inspected the house and vehicle before shifting the bodies to the govt hospital for post-mortem.The tragedy has left Murali and Revathi inconsolable. Locals described the incident as one of the most shocking in recent memory, underscoring the dangers of keeping vehicles running in enclosed spaces.
