Luka Doncic’s suspension finally caught up with him, and this time, there was no late escape. The Los Angeles Lakers star had flirted with the line for weeks, picking up technical after technical while somehow staying just on the right side of a ban. That cushion is gone now. It was a comfortable 116-99 win for the Los Angeles Lakers over the Brooklyn Nets, which quickly turned into a costly one for both Doncic and, of course, the team. There was a sense this moment had been building. Even as Doncic dominated games through March, piling up points and carrying the Lakers up the Western Conference standings. Still, the tension with officials never really eased. On Friday, it spilled over again. A brief exchange with Ziaire Williams ended with a double technical, and the league did not step in to soften the blow.
Luka Doncic receives a one-game suspension following his 16th technical foul
The NBA made it official soon after. “Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic has been suspended one game without pay for receiving his 16th technical foul of the 2025–26 season,” the league announced. Sixteen technical fouls trigger an automatic suspension, and every two after that bring another ban. This one came during the third quarter against Brooklyn. Williams got in Doncic’s face, shouting after drawing a foul. Doncic reacted with a light push. Williams answered with a swipe, and officials handed out double technicals after review. Doncic did not agree with the decision. “He was yelling in my face three times,” he said. “I just wanted to get out of there. It’s a double tech, of course. What can I say? I didn’t even talk. I just wanted to get out of there. (The referee) said my push was exaggerated, which (it) was obviously not. I don’t know what else to say.”There had been hope the league might rescind it, just as it did days earlier after an exchange with Goga Bitadze. That decision had saved him from suspension once. But there was no reversal. Doncic will now miss Monday’s game against the Washington Wizards. The Wizards sit near the bottom of the standings, and the Lakers have been rolling, winning 14 of their last 16. Doncic himself has been on a tear, averaging 37.2 points in March while shooting efficiently across the board.
What’s next for Luka Doncic?

The bigger concern now is what comes next. Every two additional technical fouls will trigger another suspension. That leaves Doncic walking a fine line with only a handful of regular-season games left. One more emotional outburst could cost him again. There is a bit of breathing room. The technical count resets once the playoffs begin, and with seven games remaining, he would need two more technicals to face another suspension. It is not impossible, given his history with officials, but it is avoidable if he manages his reactions.Away from the court, the noise has only grown louder. Doncic is dealing with a difficult breakup with ex-fiancée Anamaria Goltes, along with an ongoing legal dispute over child support and jurisdiction. It is a heavy backdrop to what has otherwise been an elite stretch of basketball. For now, the Lakers can absorb one missed game. But it would be interesting to see whether Doncic can keep his focus steady when both the stakes and the pressure rise.
