GitHub's base in India rises to 27mn, up 2mn this year

BENGALURU: There are 27 million developers on GitHub in India, according to GitHub COO Kyle Daigle. More than two million joined the platform since the beginning of 2026 – the highest from any country. Daigle said India remains GitHub’s fastest-growing developer community. “One in every seven developers joining GitHub are from India,” he told TOI. He was in Bengaluru for the company’s developer event over the weekend. He said the growth cannot be explained by population alone, pointing instead to a rising pipeline of younger, AI-native developers entering the ecosystem. “There’s more excitement and interest from this first generation of AI-native software developers,” he said, noting that students and even teenagers are contributing to projects. Greater access to tools is also accelerating adoption. AI-assisted coding tools are lowering entry barriers and enabling developers to take on more complex work. “It’s helping them solve bigger problems much more quickly,” Daigle said, adding that the surge is visible not just in sign-ups but in activity levels. India now has more open source contributors than any other country and ranks second only to the US in open source AI contributions.
