Bengaluru rains: 7 dead after hospital compound wall collapses

BENGALURU: At least seven people, including three children, have been killed after a compound wall collapsed near the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday.Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah visited the site after the collapse. “Seven deaths have been confirmed by the CMO following the tragic wall collapse near the Bowring hospital premises,” a statement from the chief minister’s office said.

Siddaramaiah also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who died.According to news agency PTI, when the heavy rains, coupled with strong winds and hailstorms, battered the area, the seven victims were taking shelter near the wall, which suddenly came down crashing. All seven people were killed on the spot.Police and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot with an earthmover to bring out the bodies and the injured from the debris with the help of locals. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said he was heading to the site after being informed about the incident. “I have spoken to the commissioner of police, that’s why I have cut off the meeting, and I am going to the spot immediately. I will see how we can help and what has to be done,” he told reporters.
