TRIGGER WARNING: The article contains references to rape and abuse.The Ernakulam judicial first class magistrate court reportedly granted bail to director Ranjith Balakrishnan in the sexual assault case.Dubbing artist and actress Bhagyalakshmi has now spoken openly about the assault case involving the ‘Spirit’ director. Through her new YouTube channel, she made it clear that she will always stand with survivors, no matter who the accused is. She also revealed that she immediately tried to contact the complainant and shared her decision to stop appearing on TV debates.
Bhagyalakshmi’s immediate response
Bhagyalakshmi said, “I didn’t start this channel expecting to talk about such a topic today. I had been planning to start it for a while, and many people had been asking me to. I’m not very familiar with technology, so I was hesitant about how to shoot and present videos. Eventually, I shot a vlog based on my book. I was planning to release it next week. But this morning, quite unexpectedly, when I casually searched on Google, I saw a news report about me—questioning why I hadn’t responded to Ranjith’s arrest. It asked whether I was being selective. Just because I don’t appear on news channels or in the media doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion. I do have a clear stand. But I don’t necessarily have to express it publicly every time. It’s my choice whether to speak or not.”Understanding the woman’s pain, she sent a message saying she was with her. She added, “I immediately called that girl; I can understand her pain.”
Standing with survivors
Bhagyalakshmi stated that she has always supported women who come forward, whether it is an actress, a nun, or anyone else facing harassment.She recalled joining the protest in the nun’s case and being emotionally involved in the actress assault case since 2017. For her, real support means being there for the survivor directly, not just speaking on television.
Decision to quit TV debates
Bhagyalakshmi announced that she will no longer participate in TV debates and explained that channels often provoke her to create dramatic reactions, which affects her mental and physical health. She said her elder son pointed this out, and she realised that direct support to survivors is more important than proving her stand on media platforms.
Update on Ranjith case
Meanwhile, as reported by TOI City, after granting bail, the court imposed conditions that Ranjith should appear before the investigating officer when required, not contact the complainant or witnesses, and stay away from the shooting location and the survivor’s residence or workplace without permission.
