Google CEO Sundar Pichai has drawn parallels between India’s current AI revolution and the Digital India movement of a decade ago, calling it a “transformational moment” that could reshape the country for years to come. Speaking at an exclusive media reception on Wednesday (February 18) – two days ahead of his keynote at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 – Pichai reflected on how far the country has come — and where it is headed next.“It’s a transformational moment. I’m a bit nostalgic, reflecting on maybe a decade ago. Coming to India and seeing the digital India transition and the similar excitement. And it’s been phenomenal to actually see a decade of progress. In some ways, this feels like the beginning of a decade long shift to AI,” Pichai said at the gathering.
India positioned to lead on all fronts: Sundar Pichai
When asked whether India’s AI success would come from being a user base, a builder of technology, or a rule shaper in global AI governance, Pichai’s response was unequivocal: India can do all three.“I travel to many countries around the world, and I do think India is uniquely positioned in this moment. There’s a chance to play a big role in all three. I think of Google as a full-stack company, and India is going to be a full-stack player in AI,” he said.Pichai emphasised that success in AI isn’t just about one dimension and it requires a comprehensive approach. “What’s important is to be in a position to do that, and that’s what this AI Summit is about. You have to make sure you’re investing in all the foundational things you need — in the research, in knowledge, and in the institutions you have here,” he explained.But for Pichai, infrastructure and research are only part of the equation. The real measure of success will be whether AI reaches ordinary Indians in their daily lives.“The government has a role in diffusing AI across the country and making sure it’s reaching people. That means you’re adopting it in all the centers and in a way that the progress is touching the average person on a day-to-day basis — be it a farmer, be it a student, be it a doctor in the healthcare sector,” he said. Pichai said that infrastructure and investments as evidence that India is laying the right foundation and that the country “in a good position to get there.”As the India AI Impact Summit 2026 gets underway, Pichai’s message is clear: Google is a full-stack company and “India is going to be a full stack player in AI.”

Earlier in the day, Pichai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In post, he said, “Great to meet with the Honorable PM @narendramodi this morning.” “We discussed how Google is helping with his mission to infuse AI at all levels in India to improve health, expand access to information in all languages, support startups, agriculture and so much more. Thank you Prime Minister for bringing us together for this incredible summit,” he added.
