VARANASI: With the fall of New Zealand on the last ball of the 19th over of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final, the India team captain Suryakumar Yadav’s ancestral Hathauda village in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh witnessed celebrations which continued till Monday.Enjoying the match on a big screen installed outside Surya’s house, his grandfather Vikrama Yadav, uncles, other relatives, and villagers burst into fireworks and cheering immediately after the fall of New Zealand’s last wicket. The celebrations continued even on Monday with the unstoppable beats of dhols.

People from neighbouring areas and districts kept arriving to greet Surya’s grandfather. “Ever since Surya received the captaincy of Team India, he further refined himself as a player. Surya delivered excellent performances atthe international level as the captain,” he said.

Before the proud moment, a series of prayers were offered by Surya’s family on Sunday for Team India’s victory. Surya’s uncle Rajkapur Yadav reached Markandey Mahadev temple at Kaithi on Ghazipur-Varanasi border on Sunday morning and organised a special puja and aarti for Team India. Surya’s mother went to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi to seek the deity’s blessings, said villagers.Even before the toss, Surya’s family members, relatives, and villagers gathered at his house to watch the match on the big screen installed there. His granddad became emotional when Surya kissed the soil on the pitch. Fall of his wicket early did not upset them, as they claimed that a score sufficient to win the final was already placed on the board.Surya’s father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, moved to Mumbai for work years ago, but the family maintains strong connections with their parental village, Hathauda, in Saidpur block of Ghazipur district in UP.
