Neighbours are like our best pals, who often turn out to be people secretly ‘wearing’ capes.Sometimes these people surprisingly step up just in time with just guts and a fire extinguisher. Stories like these light up our feeds because they show the best in people- just simple, ordinary people turning crisis into calm. One such incident took place when a teen proved to be a superhero and helped save his neighbor’s life.

Living off Hidden Glen Court in Harnett County, Nathan leaped into action when his little brother spotted smoke billowing from next door. Security cam footage from his dad, Billy Byrd’s setup, captured it all. Nathan entered the scene, vaulting a tall fence, extinguisher in hand, and bolting through the back sliding door. The Angier and Black River Fire Department confirmed to PEOPLE the fire started when hot grease spilled onto the counter while cooking, filling the house with smoke. Two people and a dog were inside. “My mom called my name, I grabbed the fire extinguisher and just did it,” Nathan recalled to WRAL-TV.Watch video here.
The teen daringly dashed into the scene
Video shows him dashing past onlookers into the smoky chaos. “Go forward with a clear mindset, get it done, get out, and then think about it later,” he told himself, per WRAL-TV.He doused the flames before firefighters arrived, no one suffered injuries, just smoke damage, Fire Chief Brent Mendenhall told PEOPLE. “The fire was put out before crews arrived at the scene. The majority of the damage from the fire was caused by smoke,” the chief said.Nathan’s no firefighter trainee; he just acted neighborly. Though being called a hero online, he shrugs it off. “I don’t look at it as [I’m] a hero, I just look at it as I’m a neighbor,” he told WRAL-TV.
