400-tonne mobile crane topples at Mumbai Metro construction site; traffic hit

MUMBAI: A 400-tonne mobile crane engaged in the construction of Metro Line 2B toppled near the Asian Heart Hospital junction in BKC during overnight work in the early hours of Wednesday, prompting traffic diversions in the area.The crane was lifting a pre-cast beam when a mechanical failure led to the mishap at the work site being handled by contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd, according to MMRDA officials. No injuries or casualties were reported.Senior MMRDA officials rushed to the spot soon after the incident to supervise the clearance operation and ensure that the affected stretch is reopened to traffic at the earliest.Officials said a 600-tonne crane was being mobilised to safely retrieve the toppled equipment. In coordination with the traffic police, vehicular movement has been diverted from the junction to facilitate the recovery work.MMRDA said teams were working to minimise inconvenience to commuters and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible. Additional safety checks are also being carried out at the site following the incident.
