Delhi to reel under heatwave from today; IMD issues yellow alert

NEW DELHI: The city is likely to reel under a heatwave condition from Wednesday to Friday with mercury expecting to reach around 44 degrees Celsius in parts of Delhi. A yellow alert is in place.As strong winds blew on Tuesday, the maximum temperature dipped to 38.8 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal.“Westerly winds prevailed with speed 15-20 Kmph gusting to 37 Kmph during the past 24 hours over Delhi,” said a Met official, adding that the mercury is expected to rise. The maximum temperature is predicted to remain around 41-43 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and may rise to nearly 42-44 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday.“A gradual rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius is likely in the maximum temperatures, leading to heat wave conditions at isolated to scattered stations over Delhi during the next five days,” said the official.The minimum temperature settled at 20.5 degrees Celsius, and is likely to rise to around 26 degrees Celsius by April 25.
