PITHORAGARH: A second-year polytechnic student, aged 20 years, was killed in a tragic incident after a javelin thrown by another student pierced his neck during a practice session hours before the start of their annual college sports day at Champawat, on Saturday. The student was an Agniveer aspirant and, according to his uncle, had recently passed the written test.Champawat police station in-charge Laxman Singh said, “Students of Champawat Polytechnic College had assembled at Gorilchaur ground, a large public space, around 8am. Before the start of sports meet at the ground, some of them were practicing their respective events. A few others were also playing football nearby.”Singh added: “The incident happened when Somendra Singh Bohra went to retrieve a football, and inadvertently, walked straight into the path of a javelin being thrown by a participant. The javelin pierced deep into his neck; he was rushed to hospital where he died. No FIR has been lodged yet. The sports meet was called off.”Meanwhile, Hira Singh Hyanki, principal medical superintendent at Champawat hospital told TOI that Bohra, a resident of Pati block in Machhyad area, suffered a deep wound in his neck, just below the ear, and succumbed to his injury during treatment.Bohra used to live with his mother and three sisters in Champawat, while his father works at a factory unit in Gujarat. The college management was unavailable to comment on the matter.
